Applying for Your Fellowship

Application Procedure

Your Fellowship Application must include the following documents:

  1. Cover letter (one page) explaining why you are applying for the chosen Fellowship, your relevant qualifications and experience, and what you hope to gain from the Fellowship and how you will apply it when you return to your country
  2. Your current detailed Curriculum Vitae including full contact details (name, title, phone, fax, email) – please refer to APHRA’s guidelines for this document (click here for further details)
  3. Names & contact details for three (3) referees – one referee must be the applicant’s current immediate supervisor while the other two (2) must have direct personal knowledge of the applicant’s personal and professional conduct and performance
  4. Certified copies of Undergraduate Medical and Ophthalmology Degrees (with this correct wording: “I certify that I have sighted the original document, and this is a true copy of it”. Signed by either a Justice of the Peace (JP), Public Notary or a Solicitor.
  5. Certified copy of the original IELTS Certificate (academic module) or certified copy of one of the alternative English language proficiency qualifications or exemptions from English language tests requirements listed in detail below.Your application will not be accepted without this certified evidence. 0f proficiency or exemption.

Period of Time for Fellowships

These Fellowships are for a period of twelve (12) months depending upon the practical start date which can be impacted by an applicant’s lack of information provided in completion of their documentation.

Lead times in getting all approvals in place can take as long as eight (8) months. So time is of the essence – please ensure that you follow the guidelines in detail.

Regarding IELTS and English language proficiency

To be eligible for limited registration for postgraduate training or supervised practise, applicants must be able to provide certified evidence of English language skills that meet the AHPRA’s English language skills standard, with one of the following

  1. International English Language Test System (IELTS) Current Academic Module:

AHPRA requires the IELTS with a minimum overall score of seven (7) and a minimum score of seven (7) in each of the following four components (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)

  1. Occupational English Test (OET)

AHPRA requires the OET with a minimum score of “A” or “B” in each of the four components: (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)

  1. Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic)

AHPRA requires the PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

  1. Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)

AHPRA requires the TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 98 and the minimum scores of 24 for Listening, 24 for Reading, 27 for Writing, and 23 for Speaking

  1. NZREX (New Zealand Registration Exam) or PLAB (Professional & Linguistic Assessment Board) test
  1. Adequate evidence of exemption from the English language test requirement:

Exemption from the English language test requirement may only be granted to those who’s Secondary (High School) and/or Medical Education was undertaken in English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa, UK or USA.

Once applications close

  • Applicants not selected for interview will be notified by email.
  • Applicants shortlisted for interview will be contacted by telephone or email.
  • Three referee reports may be requested for short-listed applicants only, prior to the interview
  • Face to face interviews will be conducted in person from April to June 2020, although international applicants may be offered an initial telephone interview.
