Although certain eye disorders can be genetic, the rule of thumb is never take your eye health for granted. Here is a list of recommended tips for maintaining optimal eye health:

1. Eat lots of nutrient rich foods
Good nutrition fuels your body and builds a good foundation for eye health. This means stalking up on healthy foods like liver, eggs, spinach, kale, oranges, red peppers and berries for eye rich nutrients like Vitamin A, Carotene, Vitamin C and Bioflavanoids. Healthy eating also lowers your risk for diabetes, a leading cause for blindness.
2. Save your eyes and butt out for good
Smoking increases future risks for cataracts and is linked to optic nerve damage and macular degeneration.
3. It’s all about the shades
Too much UV exposure can put you at risk for cataracts and macular degeneration. Choose a stylish pair with a UVA and UVB blockage of 99% to 100% and your eyes will thank you.
4. Work and play safe
Protect your eyes from injury, vision loss and blindness by wearing safety goggles when working with hazardous materials or playing sports.
5. Eye health and computers
Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a condition caused by frequent computer use and may cause eye strain, blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches and difficulty focusing. Blink often, avoid glare and keep your eyes level with the top of the monitor.
6. Visit your eye doctor
Have your eyes examined regularly. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors specialising in eye care. Catching any irregularities or condition like glaucoma early will increase your chances of keeping your eyes happy and healthy.

Eye care is a specialised service and the professionals at Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation know from experience that most eye health issues are treatable and preventable. Follow the rules outlined above and build a solid foundation for your own eye health. And if you have your eye on optical health then show your support by making a donation, becoming a member or leaving a bequest.
