Conjunctivitis is an eye disorder also known as the pink eye. It is described as an inflammation of the eyes’ conjunctiva that covers the sclera-the white part of the eye and also lines the eyelid. The conjunctiva acts as a protective barrier of the eye against irritants, such as bacteria and allergens. Pink eye occurs due to various factors, which include: eye infections, allergens, foreign bodies, chemicals, viruses, misdirected eye lashes, fungi and bacteria.

Conjunctivitis is classified into various categories depending on the cause. The main forms of conjunctivitis include the following: bacterial conjunctivitis, viral conjunctivitis and allergic conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis treatment is also dependent on the cause of the disorder. Allergic conjunctivitis is treated via use of eye drops and medications that control allergic reactions. Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment is via use of antibiotic eye drops and ointments. Lastly, viral conjunctivitis is treated via use of antiviral medications.

Conjunctivitis treatment can also be done at home through the use of the following home remedies. Ice packs can be used to decrease the inflammation, redness and itchiness. One is advised to soak a clean cloth in cold water, remove excess water and place it on the infected eye (s). Honey and warm milk can be used to wash the eyes and by mixing the two one can use the mixture as an eye drop or compressor. Hot compress, involves the use of various oils such as chamomile, that is useful in relieving the soreness and removes the infection.

Lemon juice can also be used, one can apply it around the affected region, and this will help in oozing out the pus. One can also boil fennel seeds in water and after cooling, strain out the liquid and use it to wash the eyes twice daily. This type of remedy is effective in reducing the swelling and pain on the eye/eyes. Other home remedy forms of conjunctivitis treatment include: breast milk, rose water, coriander and chamomile tea bags.
