World Glaucoma Week

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness and this World Glaucoma Week, Sydney Eye Hospital is encouraging people with loss of sight or family history of glaucoma to get their eyes tested.

Glaucoma is an eye condition where the optic nerve is damaged by the pressure of fluid in the eye, causing irreversible vision loss. Sight loss tends to be gradual and the disease is considered “the thief of sight.”

According to, glaucoma specialist, Dr Ridia Lim, many people are unaware they have glaucoma but with early treatment, the damage can be limited and sight possibly saved.

“This week we’re encouraging people with any loss of sight or family history of glaucoma to have their eyes tested. A considerable amount of peripheral vision may be lost before people realise they have a problem.”

Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation is sharing helpful tips this Glaucoma Week, one of which is the use of eye drops, the most common glaucoma treatment.

Melanie Lai, Head of Orthoptics at Sydney Eye Hospital said, “Many patients struggle with their drops for many reasons, so we wanted to share easy to follow steps and visuals to assist patients at home.

“We certainly discuss techniques face to face in clinics but also recognise the need to support patients to establish good routines at home,” said Melanie.

The Orthoptics team have developed practical advice for patients on using their eye drops to improve or help stabilise sight. Here are some of their tips:

  • Eye drops with preservatives must be thrown out after 28 days after opening.
  • If you use more than one eye drop, you should wait 5 minutes between each
  • Set an alarm on your phone to remind you to take your eye drops.
  • Your GP can give you a repeat script if you are unable to see your eye doctor.

Dr Lim added, “Patients may not realise their technique isn’t actually working. This can lead to ineffective treatments and ultimately complications. Please check your technique and ask for help.”
